The countdown is on to the Great Yorkshire Show in less than three weeks’ time, and organisers say it looks set to be a sell-out.
Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead and buy their tickets as the Wednesday of the show has now sold out. Wednesday has always traditionally been the busiest day before the show switched to selling tickets in advance only.
Thursday’s Grandstand tickets have also nearly sold out, likely due to the popularity of the Cock O The North, one of the most prestigious showjumping events in the country which regularly attracts some of the biggest names in the showjumping world.
Tickets are sold in advance only, with visitor numbers capped at 35,000 a day.
Allister Nixon, CEO of Yorkshire Agricultural Society, which organises the Great Yorkshire Show, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the support from our visitors. We have seen unprecedented demand for tickets, selling out Wednesday already and our membership sold out in April.
"It shows the depth of support and love for the show and we can’t wait to welcome visitors in less than three weeks’ time. At this stage, we have tickets remaining for the Tuesday, Thursday and Friday of the show which we do expect to sell out so please, if you are planning to come along, book now to avoid disappointment.”
Visitors are encouraged to download a new free Great Yorkshire Show App which will be available next week and is designed to help visitors plan their day using an interactive map and schedule of events. This is available on both Google Play and iOS App Stores.
The Cock O The North will be held on Thursday in the Main Ring at 3.45pm when some of the best showjumpers in the UK will compete.
Olympic medallist Graham Fletcher who is part of the show’s showjumping committee has won the accolade four times on four different horses while his sons have also regularly competed. The famous showjumping Whitaker family are also regular competitors with Robert Whitaker the most recent winner in 2021. Most recent winner was James Wilson on Imagine De Muze.
The Main Ring will also host incredible flying Frenchman Lorenzo who last appeared to packed crowds in 2018 while Sporting Soprano Lizzie Jones will also perform twice a day.
The best of British livestock will be present when Beef Shorthorn, Charolais and Longhorn Cattle Societies all host their national competitions. The show will feature several thousand sheep, all vying for the top title, with two more breeds, the Badger Face Texel and Castlemilk Moorit, making their stand-alone breed debuts this year.
There has been a record number of sheep entries this year, with a waiting list since April and additional pens drafted in to accommodate numbers which have reached 3,525. Last year had beaten previous records with 3,045.
Sheepdogs are back - last year they were so popular that an area has been created for them near to Gold Gate where there will be displays throughout each day of the show. This will be on the area which formerly hosted the Military Village which has moved up to White Gate.
The Vertu Motors GYS Stage will be held in the former fashion show building near Grey Gate. TV host Matt Baker, Peter Wright of The Yorkshire Vet and TV presenter Adam Henson are all appearing in chat shows hosted by TV presenter Christine Talbot.
The Cheese and Dairy Show will once again include the charity auction, this year raising funds for Herriot Hospice. Last year’s raised over £5,500 for The Samaritans.
