The annual junior cattle overwintering show and sale at Leyburn Auction Mart saw Oscar Boynton of Galphay, Ripon, take the championship with his Limousin steer, which sold for £1640.
Oscar also received the prize for having achieved the best gross margin at £580 at the show, which was judged by Giles Broadwith of Thornton Watlass.
In reserve came Luke Bell-Percy, Masham, with a Blonde heifer bought as a rearing calf and selling for £710. This heifer also attained the highest daily liveweight gain at 1.69kg per day.
Leyburn Mart’s Spring Dairy Show & Sale was held with Judith Carlisle on hand to present the Billy Atkinson Memorial Trophy on behalf of the family.
Father and son judging team, David & John Smith, Keighley, chose pedigree Holstein heifers from John Thompson and family, Bishop Auckland, as their champion and reserve with both selling for £2,300 each.
Richard and Avril Mcgregor, Bishopdale, claimed third place, also with a calved heifer, and made £1900.
Holstein in milk heifers averaged £1856 with others selling for G Thompson & Sons to £1920, £1900, £1880, £1850, JJ & AA & R Mcgregor £2050, £1900 and GE & J Donaldson £1900.
