Storm Lilian did its best to disrupt Malham Show at the weekend, but following some quick thinking, and rearrangement of tents, no one knew any different.

In true Yorkshire Dales style, Saturday was mainly sunny with a few showers early on, but spirits were nowhere near dampened.

The crowds of people pouring into the Dales village for a day packed with entertainment would have been amazed at the scenes of marquees, including two damaged beyond repair, being uprooted and blown all over the showground just the day before.

And it wasn’t just locals, visitors from all over the country dropped in on the show to join in the fun.

Show president, David Hargreaves, gave up his president’s tent to accommodate the produce entries - after its tent fell victim to the storm, and moved to a makeshift area in the luncheon tent.

The show was the last as chairman for Garry Schofield, who is standing down after three years.

Whether it was looking at the sheep pens, getting up close to the cattle, or watching the horse classes, there was something for everyone.

Hundreds of children took part in running and sack races, with some age groups needing more than one heat because so many youngsters wanted to take part.

The ever popular egg throwing contest saw adults and children, and even a couple of police officers, at the show taking about community safety, to do their best at catching eggs without smashing them.

There was also a dog show, with prizes going to best dog, best bitch, best puppy and to the dog and owner who most looked like each other - the winning couple went to a dog and young owner with similarly coloured hair.

Alex Wincott, up from Essex and visiting her grandmother, was the proud winner of the male dog class, with her 12 year old Jack Russell, Peanut, who she said never won anything.

In the fell races, 84-year old, Norman Bush, showed age was no barrier, and took a few minutes in pre-race warm-up, to discuss past races with relative youngster, 64 year old Brian Rycroft.

Mark McGoldrick of Settle Harriers was the winner of the senior race; Arthur Peel was the first local, and Jo Buckley, of Bingley Harriers, was first lady home.

In the horse and pony section, Harry Milburn, eight, with his 12hh Coppins Hill Chaos, was winner of the Shirley Robinson Trophy for ridden champion.

A show spokesperson said there had been a good number and standard of very competitive entries across all sections, as ever, including cattle, sheep, horticulture, produce, art and photography, walling, children’s, fell races and horses.

“Agricultural vehicles and Morris Minors were a real show of dedication and care over these older vehicles.

And, the speed sheep shearing was a great finale to the show starting after the fell races had finished, a great show of skill and speed.

There was a couple of heavy showers but the sun finally shone on Malham Show 2024 for the majority of the day.”

In the cattle section, Rebecca Jarvis was the winner of the champion heifer in milk, and also went home with the trophy for the overall dairy champion.

IR and DE Wellock went home with four trophies including cattle group and champion local dairy animal; while J and C Mellin were the winners of champion commercial beef and overall group.

John Carr got the most points in the Dalesbred sheep section, with champion Dalesbred, and pair of males, while Ian Close and Katherine Kenyon got most points in the Swaledale section.

In the children’s fancy dress, four-year old Ted Swales was overall winner with his robot costume.
